Baroque garden plans display a particular tension between supposed rigidity/formalism on the one hand and asymmetry/rich variation on the other. In a guide for visitors to his garden, for example, Louis IV defined various walking tours that criss-crossed hither and thither, paying almost no heed to the garden’s symmetrical structure. In contemporary sources, fountains were interpreted as potential disturbances of a primarily stable order. These plans are free interpretations of existing garden motifs.
